Premier American Indian flautist to hold free lecture/demo
LINCOLN, NEBR. (July 1, 2004) — R. Carlos Nakai, considered the nation's premier American Indian flautist, will host "Voice of the Wind: The Art and Culture of the Native American Flute," a free lecture/demonstration and discussion, August 1-3, 11 a.m.-Noon, as part of Nebraska's Signature Event commemorating the Bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The event will be held in the Andersen Visitor Center Theatre on the grounds of Fort Atkinson.
Nakai's presentation will explore the nature of the North American Indigena music in traditional and contemporary contexts as it relates to the ongoing philosophical and experience-based nature of the varied and diverse culture of American Indian people as a whole.

A standard park permit fee is charged to park on the fort grounds. Free parking is available below the bluff and a free shuttle bus will be regularly transporting passengers to and from the fort and other venues.
Nakai also will perform the 2nd movement of a concerto written by renowned composer Philip Glass as part of the commemoration of the first official meeting between the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the Otoe Missouria Tribe that will take place July 31-August 3, 8 p.m. in Omaha's Elmwood Park.
